Reed Boats in Haunchaco
There is a little know art craft called "reed fishing boat making" (that's a mouthful, huh?), only known by a few people in Haunchaco, Peru. They construct these boats out of dried reeds, that are left out in the sun...then they are bundeled together, secured, and stuffed with styrofoam to give them shape. It is a boat that they call cigar shaped, although I'm not sure where that reference comes from as I do not see the likeness at all. In Haunchaco though they still use these boats to fish, in the wee-early morning hours...they kneel atop these boats and paddle with a piece of bamboo -- it is really quite a site to see. Apparently this ancient form of fishing is better than traditional boats, as the fish are not frightened by them? Who knew?
Ofcourse Andrew being the adventures man he is, decided to go out on one... first he was with a local Peruvian, sitting on the back while he paddled them out into the waves...then in no time he was manning the entire craft! Hitting the waves like a seasoned pro... good thing I was onshore to record the big event! :D
